Mario Kart 7 coverWelcome to the world of Mario Kart 7, Mario Kart now in 3D! Mario Kart 7 is ironically the seventh installment of the main Mario Kart series and playable on your Nintendo 3DS. It was released on December 1, 2011 in Japan, December 2 in Europe, December 3 in Australia, and December 4 in North America. It is the first Mario Kart game released for the 3DS handheld.

This makes the gameplay much more enjoyable and it's unlike anything seen before. For those who do not like the 3D on the Nintendo 3DS, the 3D mode can be turned off using the slider control on the right side of the system.

Game Development:

Mario Kart 7 marioWith a Mario Kart game on just about every system that Nintendo has created since the Super Nintendo, we knew it was only a matter of time before Mario Kart would be released on their latest portable game console. In fact, Mario Kart 7 was first publicly announced at E3 2010 under the tentative title 'Mario Kart' which is the same conference that Nintendo announced the 3DS itself. Nintendo EAD began development on Mario Kart 7 earlier in 2010 to get the demo ready for the E3 2010 conference.

Mario Kart 7 was originally being developed by just eight Nintendo staff members due to other, higher priority games including Nintendogs + Cats. Retro Studios began to help Nintendo develop the title in December, 2010 due to time restraints making this Mario Kart the first international development in the series. Retro began developing the classic racing courses that showed up in earlier Mario Kart titles which gave them valuable experience before they focused on the more complex, newer courses.

Because flying is a new element of the game, Retro and Nintendo focused on realistic flying character animations as they continued to build the levels. The two teams worked well together and it came time to show the game again at the E3 Conference in June, 2011. At the conference, Nintendo announced Mario Kart 7 for a late 2011 release while they continued to polish the game. The actual release dates fell on December 1-4, 2011 in Japan, Europe, Australia and North America.
