Althought I’ve never had any experience using a Moog Synthesizer I can imagine how complicated yet fun they are after looking at this computer software that replicates the Moog experience.

With our computers being able to do everything today, a lot of desk items simply aren’t needed anymore. These days when I need a calculator I turn to my computer right away but if I saw this at the store I would buy one even if just to display it and use it once a year. In both PC and Mac versions, the OS calculator is a good example of what a computer application would look like not on your desktop but on your desk. Although they’ll probably never come out they’re still fun to imagine.

Google is working on a new operating system for the inexpensive netbook market, a market of portable computers that didn’t really exist a couple years ago. The open source operating system will be based on their own web browser, Chrome. Google has already introduced an operating system for mobile devices, called Android with some success. Google’s new OS is expected to begin running on computers in the second half of 2010.

I’ve seen some cool looking USB drives out there but this is one of the more detailed and hip looking ones. The incredibly detailed design resembles that of an Akai MPC-2000 drum machine. It’s a bit pricy at $40 for a 4GB stick but it will definitely turn heads at the office. There are currently two version, this and one resembling the E-Mu SP-1200. Pre-order now and they will ship on June 12th.

A group of teenagers had a dream of taking photographs of space for a science experiment. When billion dollar space rockets were out of the question, they got creative and came up with a plan to get photos under the $100 project budget. The four students managed to send a camera-operated weather balloon into the stratosphere, 20 miles above earth equiped with a cheap digital camera they programmed to take pictures. The results are astounding.

I know CD’s have been around for a while but I had no idea that they were actually older than I am. Although CD’s may not be as popular now as they were 10 years ago, it’s pretty amazing that they’ve been around for this long and are still selling. Originally a spin-off of the much less successful LaserDisc technology, Sony and Philips finally made progress with the Compact Disc when on October 1, 1982 Billy Joel’s 52nd Street became the first CD album to be released. Since then over 200,000,000,000 (200 Billion) CDs had been sold worldwide.

The Sony Walkman has come a long way since the early days when they owned the market with the Discman and slowly lost ground to the iPod. Shown above could be the early illustrations of a new touchscreen Walkman to compete with the iPod Touch. The player would feature a 3-inch OLED display which as you can see from the scale compared to the hand would be smaller than the current iPod Touch. It would also include WiFi and built-in access to Amazon’s MP3 Store. Although it’s currently just a rumor, I think it’s a good idea for Sony to focus on a product like this in order to compete for portable music market share.

You see colorful attention grabbing gift cards all the time while waiting in line at stores but they usually don’t serve a function other than being a card for spending money. This season, Target is doing something a little different, a functional digital camera and gift card in one. The camera features 1.2MP and 8MB of on board memory for about 50 shots and comes with a USB cord, driver disk and a 40 free prints voucher. After you spend the initial $50-$1,000 gift, the camera can be reloaded with money and memories.

As of November 1st, 2008, Microsoft has stopped issuing licenses for Windows 3.x which debuted in May, 1990. The 18 year old operating system carried Microsoft through the early 90’s up until Windows 95 came out in August, 1995. Windows 3.x included a significantly revamped user interface as well as many technical improvements over Windows previous OS. In order to install Windows 3.x, you needed a hard drive with a whopping 6-7 MB of free space.

You may soon be seeing Best Buys at your local airport and I don’t mean the stores. Best Buy vending machines which could sell everything from digital cameras to cell phones are currently in a pilot test program. If popular we could be tempted to buy the latest iPod right before take off.

I was always envious of Ricky Schroder in Silver Spoons, not so much for all the cash his father had but for what all that cash bought. The arcade games were nice but the most amazing thing he had was a rideable train running through his living room. Now a similar rideable train can be yours. The 30′ diameter 12-gauge circular track is made of welded steel, can be set up in under an hour and supports a single child up to 100 lbs. So I guess I’ll have to lose about 60 pounds and save up $4600 before this thing sells out during the upcoming holiday season.
