Icons of the Web Gigantic Graphic

Posted on 25 Aug 2010 | Tagged as: Web | 40 views

web icons

nmap.org posted a giant interactive graphic based on the largest websites on the net. This large 37,440 x 37,440 pixel graphic shows a gigantic Google favicon surrounded by smaller but still huge Yahoo, Facebook, Wikipedia, MSN and YouTube favicons. Zooming in you will start to see less recognizable website icons. It’s a clever way to show the biggest sites without just a standard list with numbers next to the websites.

Calvin and Hobbes Search Engine

Calvin and Hobbes Search Engine

Calvin and Hobbes is one of my favorite comic strips. It was syndicated for ten years from November 18, 1985 to December 31, 1995. It follows the humorous antics of Calvin, a precocious and adventurous six-year-old boy, and Hobbes, his sardonic stuffed tiger. Michael Yingling created a search engine that takes phrases and searches and finds the results  of text from every Calvin and Hobbes comic strip.

Hulu Adds Plus Service For $9.99/Month

Posted on 30 Jun 2010 | Tagged as: Web | 148 views

After years of providing free content, Hulu is adding a premium service for $9.99/month. For that price you will get tons of TV show full series, not just the latest episodes plus they will be in HD quality. In addition, you will be able to watch Hulu on your ipod, ipad or PS3. Seems like Netflix will finally now have some decent competition.

Calculate In Your Browser With Google

Posted on 08 Jun 2010 | Tagged as: Web | 124 views

I learned something new today when I was trying to add up some numbers at work. Not in the mood to open up a new application, I did a Google search for an online calculator. To my surprise I discovered that all I have to do is simply type in the calculation right into Google and it will tell me the answer as I type it. I then clicked on the Google Calculator link and discovered that you can do some big time equations (that I don’t exactly understand) in Google as well.

Bejeweled 2 iPhone / iPod Touch Wallpaper

Posted on 06 Apr 2010 | Tagged as: Web | 374 views

Bejeweled 2

Popcap Games, the creator of many fun computer games recently created a few iPhone / iPod Touch wallpaper images. The wallpaper graphic on the right is my favorite one. It’s of the popular game Bejeweled 2. You’ll notice the bottom has a blank area that looks like a button. That’s the area where you Slide to Unlock once you turn on the system.

To install this wallpaper, follow these simple steps:

  1. Download the wallpaper by right clicking it and clicking “save as” or by just dragging it to your desktop
  2. With your iPhone or iPod touch connected, launch iTunes and click on the Photos tab and click “Sync photos from”
  3. From the pop-up menu choose the folder/destination in which you have placed the pictures and sync
  4. On your iPhone or iPod touch. Go to the photos button and click the album where your wallpaper is located
  5. Select the new picture you want to use as a wallpaper and click the icon in the lower left corner and select “Use as Wallpaper”

Missile Command

To celebrate Missile Command’s 30th anniversary, Atari has released a remixed version of the game for the web. The website says it best: Chock full of power ups, tricky enemies and intense boss battles, Missile Command by OMGPOP has the makings of a modern classic. This game actually has some amazing control with your mouse or laptop trackpad. You can play the OMGPOP updated version of the game or the original Missile Command.

Code Organ

Code Organ let’s you type in a website URL of your choice and it will play music based on the code of that website. It will actually analyze the code of any website based on what’s inside the <body> tags and will based on an algorithm, define chords, synth style and drum patterns. The music results are surprisingly and randomly catchy.

Google Introduces Buzz

Posted on 10 Feb 2010 | Tagged as: Web | 248 views

Google Buzz

Yesterday at a press conference, Google announced a new tool called Buzz. Now Google wouldn’t be the Google Gods they are if they weren’t continuing to come out with new and better ways to communicate and socialize online. Google Buzz is a cross between Facebook, Twitter and Email. It lets you share images, videos and stories with your friends or with the whole world and it works in with Gmail which is great if you already use a Gmail account as our primary email because you will already have all the people you communicate with built-in. Instead of just emailing a story to friends with annoying attachments and links to videos and stories, why not just send them the pictures, videos, stories and your thoughts right in Buzz? It currently has built-in Picasa, Flickr, Google Reader, and Twitter integration. Google also rolled out a phone app that works with Buzz.

Features include:

  • No setup needed: Automatically follow the people you email and chat with the most in Gmail.
  • Share publicly or privately: Publish your ideas to the world or just to your closest friends.
  • Inbox integration: Comments get sent right to your inbox so it’s easy to keep the conversation going.
  • Google Buss IllustrationPhoto friendly: See thumbnails with each post, and browse full-screen photos from popular sites.
  • Connect sites you already use: Import your stuff from Twitter, Picasa, Flickr, and Google Reader
  • See updates in real time: New posts and comments pop in as they happen. No refresh required.
  • Just the good stuff: Buzz recommends interesting posts and weeds out ones you’re likely to skip.

PlayStation 15th Anniversary Website

Posted on 27 Dec 2009 | Tagged as: Video Games, Web | 174 views

PlayStation 15th Anniversary Website

To celebrate the PlayStation’s 15th anniversary, Sony designed a cool Flash site with a timeline of the PlayStation products over the past 15 years. The site can be navigated  by either the graphics on the top or the history timeline along the bottom of the site. Once you click on a particular console or portable device, information detailing that machine will pop up along with pictures and ads from when that console was on the market.

The site can be found here.

MST3K Now on Hulu

MST3K on HULU

Mystery Science Theater 3000, the great show once on Comedy Central and then on SciFi Channel before being canceled off the air about 10 years ago can now be found on Hulu. This show is about a human and two robots stuck on an evil ship forced to watch horrible movies. The three of them tear the movie apart making fun of everything from the actors to the low budget props to the music to the..well.. they knock the whole movie. It’s a formula that actually works and it’s one of my favorite shows of all time. There are currently only 5 one and a half hour episodes available.

How Much Sugar is in That?

Posted on 06 May 2009 | Tagged as: Web | 149 views

Ever wonder how much sugar you’re really eating or drinking when you’re enjoying your favorite tasty treat? The website http://www.sugarstacks.com/ will let you know through pictures that show the snack along with sugar cubes symbolizing the amount of sugar in that snack. The results are a bit surprising. One can of soda for example which I thought would only have two or three sugar cubes worth of sugar turns out to have nine and a half cubes worth of sugar. a Cinnabun roll has fourteen!

In case you got bored with CubeECraft Papercraft Toys and are interested in something new, you may want to check out Marshall Alexander’s website which offers diagrams you can print out, cut out and have fun with. The one-piece papertoys consist of a single flat piece of paper, which by folding is transformed into a 3-dimensional model. There’s some really neat stuff on the site including all kinds of monster characters, robots, insects, fish, even 1970’s video game consoles.

YouTube Goes 720p Widescreen

Posted on 28 Nov 2008 | Tagged as: Web | 199 views

With more and more people transitioning from older 4:3 televisions to newer LCD and Plasma 16:9 TVs, you knew it was only so long before YouTube would make the transition also. Earlier this week (as an early holiday present) YouTube went from a standard 4:3 screen ratio to a 16:9 screen ratio, making it too widescreen. What that means is that all the videos you’ve uploaded or seen in the past will have the black bars on the left and right side of the video. From here on out though more and more people will be shot and uploaded in HD widescreen making the black bars more and more uncommon over time.
