Life Cereal vs The Game of Life

Posted on 22 Feb 2010 | Tagged as: Comparisons | 189 views

Life Cereal

A breakfast cereal made of whole grain oats, distributed by the Quaker Oats Company. It was introduced in 1961. The cereal’s advertisements currently sport the slogan “Life is full of surprises”.

The Game of Life

A board game created in 1860 by Milton Bradley that simulates a person’s travels through his or her life, from college to retirement, with jobs, marriages and children (or not) along the way.

The game of Life

Price:

$2 – $5

Price:

$15 – $25

Time it takes to enjoy:

Usually about 10 minutes for a bowl in the morning.

Time it takes to enjoy:

Usually about 30 minutes to an hour depending on how many players.

What is has to do with real life:

In real life you need energy to survive. With it’s whole grain goodness, Life cereal provides you with that energy.

What it has to do with real life:

While you work your way through the board game, you encounter real issues that you may go through in real life, preparing yourself.

Fun factor (1-10 scale):

7. The cereal tastes great but the box is usually a boring read.

Fun factor (1-10 scale):

8 but only because of the awesome spinner that comes with the game.

Average time to clean up:

5 minutes. 3 minutes if you have a dishwasher

Average time to clean up:

3 minutes.

Winner:

Life cereal.

Ask me this question 15 years ago and I might have said The game of life but because I don’t play board games very often anymore, I’ll take a bowl of Life cereal over the game of life these days.

Chess Set For Beginners

Beginners chess set

You may wonder how a chess set that looks like a scale model of a city skyline is actually a chess set for beginners. The grooves in the pieces actually remind the player of the move pattern which that particular piece is allowed to do. Also the red wooden pieces on top of the grey wooden board doesn’t hurt in making this set attractive.

Tetris was created on June 6th 1984 by Alexander Pajitnov, a programmer at the Moscow Academy of Sciences who worked on the game in his spare time. Although it was originally released on the PC, Tetris gained popularity on the Nintendo Game Boy where it sold around 35 million copies. Brain scans of Tetris players show the game trains people to use their brains more efficiently. Today Tetris can be downloaded or bought and played on most consoles and mobile devices.

PSP Go!

This week is E3 which means the big three (Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony) are all announcing their hardware and software news for the next few months. Sony’s big announcement today was the PSP Go!, the latest version and first total redesign of the PSP hardware. The PSP Go! is not going to replace the PSP right away but that could be something that happens a couple years from now. The most interesting thing about the PSP Go! is that Sony decided to completely ditch any kind of physical media and make the system strictly download only. The PSP Go! is due out October 1, will cost $249 and will have the following features:

  • 16GB built-in flash memory
  • Slide-out controller
  • 3.8″ screen
  • Bluetooth
  • 50 percent smaller than the original PSP
  • 40 percent lighter than the original PSP

Peggle Getting a Touch of Apple

Posted on 04 Feb 2009 | Tagged as: Apple, Video Games | 211 views

iPod Peggle

A PopCap representative recently confirmed to Joystiq that Peggle is launching on the iPhone in early March which makes one wonder how many gadgets/consoles will we see this game on? Not that it’s a bad game by any means. Even though the theme behind the game was stolen from The Price is Right’s “Plinko”, Peggle creators Popcap still were smart enough to find a way to get Plinko into our homes and hearts and I’ll be buying this game to kill time during my long daily Metro trips.

Doom Comes To Flash, Still Amazing!

Doom Flash

The original Doom which was released way back in 1994, showed me that computers can be valid machines to play video games on. Someone has created the game using Flash and it’s now playable on NewGrounds. The music isn’t all there but the graphics are just as I remembered in all their low-res goodness. You will need to download Flash Player 10 if you haven’t already done so. Enjoy Flash Doom!

Introducing… The Beatles Music Game

Posted on 02 Nov 2008 | Tagged as: Video Games | 129 views

Beatles Music Game

Apple Corps and MTV have announced a Beatles music game to be developed by Harmonix and released sometime late in 2009. Harmonix, known for its Rock Band title, said it will not be an expansion pack but its own full innovative game which takes advantage of the Rock Band platform. The game will feature 42 tracks performed between the years of 1962 to 1969. Apparently visual imagery will play a big part in this game, maybe referring to the iconic artwork on Beatles album covers. With Beatles fans entering their retirement age in the next few years, maybe Harmonix thinks they will have more free time on their hands to play video games.

LittleBigPlanet

After a long wait and countless Media Molecule teasers, LittleBigPlanet is reported to have been spoted at some GameStops across the country. The puzzle platformer and world creation video game was supposed to come out last week but one of the background music tracks references two expressions that can be found in the Qur’an which caused the one week delay. Now look at how happy this news made Sackboy.

Peggle Dual Shot

Addictive game addicts rejoice! More Good news for Peggle and/or Nintendo DS fans. On March 3rd of next year we will be seeing Peggle make its Nintendo debut on the DS. Peggle: Dual Shot is being developed by Q Entertainment, the same group responsible for popular games such as Rez and Lumines. Not sure yet how the one touchscreen will fare with Peggle’s addictive gameplay but I’m sure it will remain just as addictive on the DS as it is on the other platforms.

Dr. Mario & Puzzle League GBA

Posted on 11 Oct 2008 | Tagged as: Nintendo Profiles | 159 views

In 2005, Nintendo came out with a puzzle game double pack, Dr. Mario & Puzzle League for the Game Boy Advance. Puzzle games never get old so when you have two addicting puzzle games like these together in one cartridge, you have something fun for years to come. Both games feature multiple modes and countless options. If you have a buddy with the game, you can play vs them in multiplayer mode in either game.

Dr. Mario

In Dr. Mario, you must remove viruses by throwing vitamin capsules into a bottle. Since many viruses are trapped at the bottom of the bottle, you must plan ahead in order to eliminate them all.

Puzzle League

In Puzzle League, you’ll need to form chains of three or more same-colored blocks. When colors are matched, they will dissapear, scoring you points and clearing the screen.

Neave.com N-Blox: A Falling Blocks Game

Posted on 10 Oct 2008 | Tagged as: Video Games, Web | 508 views

I’m guilty of playing Tetris on Game Boy for hours straight. In fact I’d play it so much that I’d see falling blocks in my dreams at night. A while ago, an Interactive Designer named Neave created a falling blocks game called N-Blox which plays similar to Tetris and is just as addicting. Be sure to check Neave’s other games and just browse around the awesome, newly redesigned site, Neave.com.

PopCap Releases Peggle Nights

Posted on 17 Sep 2008 | Tagged as: Video Games | 160 views

Peggle Nights

There’s a game that I was glued to earlier this year called Peggle. I downloaded the trial version which limited me to 60 minutes of gameplay but didn’t purchase the full version because I was afraid I’d be too addicted to it. Popcap has just released Peggle Nights which features 60 levels and 60 Challenges of Peggle goodness. I’m sure it’s just as good as the original and I want it almost as bad as Bejweled 3.
